Hybrid car service

What does HEVRA approval mean?

HEVRA is an independant organisation that ensures members meet certain standards when it comes to training and equipment. HEVRA also offers technical support to our members, so your local garage not only has their own expertise, but that of our entire network. The HEVRA logo means at one glance you know a garage knows what they're doing, and has the tools, equipment, data and backup to work on your electric or hybrid car, whether you need an MOT, service, air conditioning, brakes, or other services.

Hybrid cars

Hybrid cars have a traditional combustion engine, but work in conjunction with one or more electric motors and a battery in order to improve the engine's efficiency. Some hybrids, such as the Honda Insight, Civic and CR-Z, use an electric motor joined to the flywheel of the engine, driving the wheels through a traditional gearbox. The motor can add power for acceleration, and make use of power that would otherwise be wasted, improving fuel economy.

Other hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, Auris and Yaris, use a planetary gearset to make the most of the two powertrains. This system allows the Toyota hybrid to drive in electric only mode for short periods, and means it does not need a traditional gearbox. Related systems have been used on Lexus models, such as the CT200h, GS300h, GS450h, RX400h, RX450h, and others.

Nowadays, dozens of other manufacturers from Mercedes-Benz to Land Rover are all seeing the benefits of a hybrid system for improving performance, economy or both.

Electric cars

Electric cars offer a further benefit over hybrids- a completely silent drive, and no need to ever visit a petrol station. Most electric car drivers refuel at home, and rapid chargers at motorway service areas and destination chargers in car parks, allow the vehicle to be used for journeys beyond the driving range.

Electric cars are gaining popularity in the UK, with models like the Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe and BMW i3 enjoying steady sales.

Plug-in hybrids and range-extended electric vehicles

A plug-in hybrid is a combination of the two above concepts- a car that drives like a hybrid, but can also be topped up with electricity- meaning the car can be refuelled with electricity or petrol depending on which is available and convenient. One of the most popular models is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which caters for normal home charging, rapid charging, and can be filled with petrol. More and more manufacturers are getting on the plug-in bandwagon, with models like the Audi A3 e-tron, VW Golf GTE and BMW 330e all capable of driving around 30 miles on electric power alone before switching to hybrid mode- ideal for people who can plug in at home but may need to do a long trip at short notice in an area with few public chargers.

One of the models currently available is the Hyundai Ioniq, available as a hybrid, a plugin hybrid and a pure electric vehicle. BMW's i3 also offers an optional range extender, taking the car's electric range a little further thanks to a 650cc engine charging up the batteries whilst driving.
